Just a few of my Seniors from this past fall... Oh my!!! Our future is in good hands with these amazing kids.

As a mother with two children currently in college, these photos mean so much to me. Capturing these kids as they are launching off into their bright futures is simply precious. I love the excitement and anticipation. I can appreciate the nerves as well, from both the parents as well and the seniors! Their future literally is right in front of them and there are so many directions they can go. As parents, we have worried, loved, laughed and cried through 18 years and now we are letting them go. It is HARD but also full of joy and excitement for us because we know what adventures lie in store for our children.

One of my favorite Senior photo sessions are when I go to a college campus and take College Graduation photos. One of them this past fall was a couple graduating from Georgia Tech. One was receiving his four year degree and the other a Masters Degree from Georgia Tech. In addition, we just happened to see Buzz out and about on campus and scored some photos with the graduates in their cap and gown and with Buzz from Georgia Tech! WOW. how fun was that??? Alot!!! :) lol.

What a JOY to capture these beautiful families and their excitement about Christmas!! I love these photos and I love the simple, classic elegance of timeless Christmas Tree Farm Photos. North Georgia and Western North Carolina is lovely this time of year and the Tree Farms are so fun and capture the promise of the season so beautifully.

These sessions are always some of my favorites! In my own home, my motto for Christmas decorations has always been "If it doesn't move, decorate it!" However, with all of my family and children's photography set up's, my motto is ALWAYS, simple is better. I want the focus of these classic, timeless photos to be on the families, the smiles, the connection and the beautiful silly moments. K Boyer Photography is a member of Lake Chatuge Chamber of Commerce in Hiawassee, GA and as a member, it is a priviledge each year to donate to the Lake Chatuge Chamber of Commerce Silent Auction Fund Raiser. This is how I came to meet Peggy, the winner of my auction item. She won the bid for my mini session and requested to use it for real estate photography instead of family photos (she is an empty nester too!). So, I loaded up my camera and lighting gear and headed out to Hiawassee to take some Instagram worthy real estate photos! She wanted images of the entire apartment but also the small, quaint details that make it such an inviting and comfortable home. In addition to the inside, we captured some winter landscape photos of her dock on Lake Chatuge as well as the beautiful firepit area that shows off the mountains in the distance and the lake in the foreground. What a perfect spot for an afternoon fire, 'smores or cocktails. I can also image that it is the perfect place to watch the fireworks over the waters of Lake Chatuge on July 4th or New Years Eve!!

Atlanta's best family and children's photographer

After many many years of photographing families, I have picked up a few favorite tips from all the various outfits, families and personalities. Below is just a very small sample of my favorite outfits from last fall... So many cute ones!! Love the variety and simplicity of all of these outfits.

YES! My favorite tips and take aways for what to wear in Atlanta for fall family photos.

Be comfy and be you - Each of these outfit choices reflects the families that are wearing them.
Pick a base color and add pops of color or simple patterns around it. You can also start with one base piece and go from there.
Add Textured Fabrics. You can't have too much. My favorites are lace, corduroy, knits, chambray, gauzy or crepe fabrics, velvet, Swiss dots and waffle cloth.
Stick to one or two patterns and have solid colors and textures for the rest.
Long Flowy dresses for moms and little girls are wonderful. Movement in these is simply gorgeous and they are very forgiving
Neutral pallets of soft creams and neutral colors are lovely and timeless.
Accessories are wonderful! A scarf, a vest, a jacket, a bowtie... layering is wonderful!
Think classic, simple and timeless

A few No's

Avoid short skirts and if little girls have dresses (pants are better but..) they MUST wear bloomers.
Try to avoid low cut dress and tops, tight clothing and bare arms.
Do your best to limit the number of patterns. Add texture instead!
Stripes: Skinny and close together stripes don't look good. (EXCEPTION: Thick stripes or skinny stripes that are spaced out look amazing!)

Tips for Gorgeous Outdoor Photos

Being outdoors in the summer sun is a great setting for some fun photos of you and your loved ones. In order to get the best results from your session, there are a few pro tips to think about or bring for your family session before you step in front of my lens!

Most Importantly... HAVE FUN with your family! Pack the patience and just enjoy some fun family time. There are no "rules" and we will capture lighthearted, relaxed fun. The hard work of getting ready for the shoot is done and now it is time to simply enjoy. We will play games, sing songs and act silly so just enjoy.

Choose your time of day. Since midday can be scorching, we can work together to plan your shoot early in the morning or just before the sun sets to capture some great lighting. However, if you have young children and early or late doesn't work for their schedule, no worries! We can adjust accordingly and work with the best time for your family. I can shoot any time of the day and find the best lighting! (The photo on the right was shot during the full midday sun!)

Bring along some tissues & concealer powder. Unless it's a cool day, you're probably going to sweat. Bring along some tissues for dabbing off the sweat and your concealer powder for touch ups.

Stay hydrated. Posing for pictures may not seem like hard work but in the hot sun, you don't have to move around much to be affected by the heat. Make sure you bring lots of water and other hydrating beverages, and drink up often.

Full Tummies! Make sure everyone in your family (or you!) are well fed and have a full tummy. Feel free to bring along a snack to help keep everyone happy and smiling.

Apply makeup sparingly. You want that fresh, sun kissed look in your photos so don’t overdo your makeup application.

What you wear matters. Choose clothing that is comfortable and fits your body shape. Feel free to incorporate accessories such as a hat but don’t let it overwhelm the photo.

As a photographer, I am constantly reading, taking classes, watching videos and doing everything I can to further my craft. I just saw this video about composition and while there were great tips in the video (I love this photographers work!), I was also very impressed with the MODEL in this video. It is completely normal to feel a little awkward while taking senior portraits. Many seniors tend to feel self-conscious when it is ALL about them! :). It's ok! Now is your time to relax, have fun and SHINE.

I am big on visual examples and the model in this video moves so beautifully and easily that I had to share this with you. In photographing seniors, these sorts of moves would be wonderful and so helpful. They were slow, soft, natural and simple. If you are interested and have the time, enjoy this video and gather some ideas!!

Here are my takeaways from this model AND my top tips for a sensational senior photo session

EYES: Use your eyes to express emotion. When you smile naturally your whole face lights up and your eyes look bright and awake. I will give you prompts to help you smile naturally but feel free to practice smiling in the mirror and use different expressions to see what looks best. Also, the model in this video is not always looking at the camera. It is ok to look away.

MOVE: I Love love love photos with movement!!!! Staying stationary can sometimes produce a very staged and cheesy look. Just because you are sitting or standing still doe not mean you can't change the angle of your body to create a look that is fresh and inspired. Try leaning into the camera slightly to appear more engaged, shift y our weight from left to right, or simply move your chin slightly up and down for different shots as this gives us a variety of facial expressions to work with.

POSING TIPS:

Watch her hands... she softly touch her face and she is moving them around on jacket or in her hair
She is almost never standing flat footed (both feet squarely facing the camera with the entire foot on the ground).
Tilted shoulders... she is always dropping one shoulder or the other
Leaning back... creating an "S" shape to her body by leaning back
she is great at keeping her chin down

SMILING: She is not always (actually almost never!) smiling directly at the camera. Now, I love full on smiles right at me. But, I also love the soft smile or the soft expressions of a neutral face.

RELAX: Great photos happen when you are relaxed and confident. Le the excitement of your photo session show through the lens as you take a moment to breathe, relax and just enjoy the process. You may feel silly but we will do everything we can to help you feel more comfortable.

BREATHE: This may sound obvious but breathing is key to capturing a natural look. Take time to practice taking a deep breath while smiling in front of the mirror. Slowly release the air while holding the smile and notice how your face and eyes settle into a natural and relaxed expression. Allow your eyes to "smile" by focusing on the apples of your cheeks and pressing upwards. When in doubt, just breathe. ;)

BEAUTIFY: This goes for everyone. Ladies, spend some extra time getting your hair blown out, get your makeup done and choose an outfit that makes you look and feel your best. As for the men, take a shower and shave. When you look your best, you feel your best and when you feel your best, you are naturally more confident. Go the extra mile to walk into your senior session feeling confident, attractive, prepared and inspired.

I just watched this video for composition ideas (always learning!) and I LOVE the way this model moves in her shoot. If you are a senior then this is a great video to watch to give you ideas on how to move! I will of course guide you as well.

How to Find the Perfect Photo Shoot Location

Choosing a photo shoot location might seem like a big deal but it really doesn't have to be difficult. I have loads of options for great spots and am happy to guide you in picking the perfect location for your family based on your unique needs. A location usually drives some of the other decisions you will need to make about your shoot so it’s important to choose the right place. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before you decide on a location:

Do you have a "theme" in mind? Are you more interested in buildings and shops as a backdrop for your images or is a more casual, parklike setting your style? If you don't know what kind of backdrop you want, ask me! You can also take an afternoon drive around your city for inspiration. It's easy to overlook beautiful spots that are practically in your backyard. Ask family and friends for ideas or reach out to me because I know LOADS of locations in Atlanta and surrounding areas as well as all around Lake Chatuge.

Are you allowed to take pictures there? Make sure that you can legally take pictures at the location that you have in mind and if you are bringing a pet, we will confirm that they are allowed on the property. If it's not public property or available to the public we will need to get permission first. For example, photos anywhere in the City of Roswell require a photography permit. Places like the Botanical Gardens or the High Museum must be approved and require a large fee to use the facilities.

I have loads of ideas for locations if you share with me the look you are going for. While the Botanical Gardens might be a financial stretch or the Hamilton Gardens in Hayesville GA doesn't allow dogs, I have alternative locations that can give you the same look and feel! For example, some cities require a permit or some locations must be shot only during certain times of the day.

Is your location choice good for children? Or parents & Grandparents to easily walk around? Is it accessible? Consider that not all outdoor locations may be available all year round or you might not be able to get to them at all. Your safety is also an important aspect to think about before you decide on a location. Taking pictures on a mountain ledge may look neat but it’s best not to put yourself in harm’s way. Also, who is in your photography party? Can you walk easily or are there lots of stairs. Is everyone in your group able to walk around without difficulty? Is your location choice good for children? Or parents & Grandparents to easily walk around? Murphey Candler Park is wonderful with flat sidewalks and easy strolls.

How do you get to your location? Will it be easy to walk to the meeting area, are you able to change your clothing and touch up your hair and makeup before the shoot? You should also find out whether there is a restroom that’s close enough in case you need it. If you will be changing outfits (seniors!) then it is nice to have a clean bathroom available. We can make do in a lot of situations!

If the location you have chosen has a lot of foot traffic, you need to ask yourself whether you are comfortable being photographed in front of others. If not, you might want to rethink your choice in location. And while it is not location related, another consideration is the time of year. If it is freezing cold, will you want to be outside? How about in July or August? You will have a great tan but you might not stand the heat!!

Zubia_06-2022-Kristin_Boyer_IMG-4021 Make sure that your location doesn’t become a distraction. For example, is there a creek your child will want to jump into immediately or a playground that is calling their name? Your location tells a story so it’s worthwhile to choose a meaningful spot.

An Amazing 2021 in Photos

2021 Year in Review

What a crazy ride for the last two years, right? Oh my! I think that is why I love this vide so very much. I was terrible about getting all my families posted to social media this year... lots of photos, lots of smiles (and some tears!) and a HUGE number of beautiful people but I simply ran out of time (and energy!) to post on Social Media this year. So, this is my replacement ... I could not fit ALL of my kiddos, newborns and families but I tried to pick a good sample from my year. It was as much fun to put this video together as it was to photograph these amazing humans. I loved everything about my year and I hope you can smile too as you watch the joy and connection that was captured by my faithful canon lens. :)

We often get asked what to wear to a family photo shoot. Kate L Photography has graciously shared shared some inspiration boards that I really love! I thought this might help you plan out an outfit or two or give you some ideas to help. This and scheduling is often the most difficult part about family photos! One of my most important tips for family photo outfits is to feel comfortable and make sure it is something that looks like you. If you are not comfortable in whatever you are wearing, your photos will reflect that.

What a beautiful young lady!! We had a lovely time wandering around campus and capturing these special photos for her graduation from Emory University. Cap and Gown, casual outfit and a beautiful dress... we covered it all and had a wonderful time. If you are familiar with the emory Campus, you might notice the flowers are a little different around the gate to campus. I had to do a little photoshopping to get some flowers in there because they had not yet been planted. ;). Beautiful day, beautiful girl and a wonderful time on Emory's campus.

UGA Bound!! This beautiful North Springs High School Graduate is heading to Athens!!! Such a fun shoot. Senior photos are the BEST... it is an honor to meet these young people and see the excitement and sense of adventure that lies before them. These photos were done in a urban setting and we wandered around this downtown area snapping photos in every nook and cranny. It was a blast!

I had such a great time with these guys at Emory University's Campus the weekend before graduation. We spent several hours on campus, primarily at their fraternity house and the Emory sign taking individual photos and group photos of these smart, motivated young men. It was a beautiful day, the campus was alive with activity and after a year of off campus learning, zoom classes and distance learning. It was fantastic to see everyone happy to be together and celebrating this amazing achievement of theirs. This was a group of about 17 young men, class of 2021 Emory University graduates.

WE were at their fraternity house first and took most of the individual photos there as well as a huge mix of group images. Then we headed over to the Emory University Gate and front entrance. A little champagne popping for these graduates was in order and we captured the eruption and spray of the champagne bottles over the top of these young me.

I get lots of questions about what to wear for fall family photos and I wanted to share what this beautiful family did because it is so simple and looks so good and coordinated! The color yellow in these images is perfect with the time of year and all other other outfits coordinate with it. It is simple, classic, timeless and everyone looks good. Mom has a scarf around her neck to give some great visual interest and it pulls everything together.

Fall is such a beautiful time of year and making your clothes work for the season in terms of color takes your images up a notch really works wonders. A great place to start is picking your first "inspiration" piece and then deciding on everything else to coordinate with it. The inspiration piece for this family was the yellow shirt and headband on the youngest daughter. Enjoy!!

When COVID hit and turned our world upside down, a lot of photographers around the country started doing Front Porch Portrait Sessions and I did too. We raised thousands of dollars for charity which was awesome! Another side benefit of this was that I met some awesome families while I zipped all over Atlanta and took super quick, 5 minute photos!! HEre is one of the amazing families I met and followed up the front porch portraits with a mini session this fall at Donaldson Banister Farm! Such a beautiful family and such an amazing opportunity to capture these memories. Even the dog was awesome!! I love meeting new people, hanging out loving on these babies and enjoying the company of these great people. This was a studio style newborn session where I bring the props, blankets, hats etc. and set up a "studio" in your home for the baby only, sleepy newborn poses. We also do a combination of family, kids and parents with the newest family member. Because of Covid, we are not doing as many 'traditional' studio sessions but that is ok because I just bring it all to you! We are also waiving the travel fee right now because of Covid. I am thrilled to have been featured and interviewed for a blog post Between 2 Trains, co-hosted by Van Pappas and Eric Moss, about my school portrait photography. We talked about all sorts of topics and at the end, they had a little game that I failed miserably!! But it was hilarious!! This is a new podcast series in Chamblee and their goal is to spotlight local business owners and entrepreneurs while at the same time connecting community members.

One of the great joys of my photography business is taking school portrait photos each spring and fall. I love everything about it... the huge variety of children ofall ages, pre-school and up through high school. (Senior portraits too!) I have just a few minutes with each child to make them smile a genuine smile... one t hat captures who they are so their parents can enjoy these timeless images. School photos are almost a rite of passage, aren't they? We look back on them and smile, remember and frequently laugh at ourselves. I love being a preschool portrait photographer in Atlanta GA!

All photographers thinking their clients are beautiful, that is true, however, mine are EXCEPTIONALLY beautiful! :). These two Chamblee Charter High School Senior girls are twins, super sweet, smart AND athletic lacrosse players!! They have it ALL! We had a great time in Alpharetta GA on a lovely morning and afternoon taking these photos. We started in a park and then had several outfit changes and ended up in an awesome urban location so we were able to get a great mix of natural, classic photos and some more trendy urban photos that senior girls love! Plus lots of time for outfit changes. A typical senior session can take anywhere from an hour to two hours if there are twins! :). I love trying new and unique places so if you want to venture up to Avalon like these girls or go somewhere totally different, I am game!!

With Fall mini sessions on the schedule, I wanted to let you know about some health and safety precautions we have put in place as well as a new required Covid-19 Waiver. The health and safety of my clients and my family are a top priority. Therefore, I would like to reassure you that I am taking measures advised by WHO and CDC to ensure that my littlest clients and their families are protected.

Clients are required to disclose and reschedule the session if their child or anyone who will be present during the session has had a fever or any other symptoms such as cough, flu like symptoms, runny nose, gastro intestinal issues or vomiting in the last 48 hours. Have you been around anyone exhibiting these symptoms? Are you living with anyone who is sick or quarantined? To reschedule, please contact me as soon as possible. There is no fee to reschedule. I will also afford you the same courtesy.
All sessions scheduled during this time will be in-home or outdoor sessions. Studio sessions are not available at this time.
Before each session I regularly monitor my temperature. I ask that clients check their temperatures as well prior to their scheduled session.
Additionally, I will wear a mask when maintaining a safe distance is not feasible and posing methods will involve a limited amount of touching when at all possible.
I wash my hands thoroughly before and after each session.
I will carry hand sanitizer, wipes and or spray with me at all times.
Until further notice, I will only be scheduling ONE newborn session every other day to ensure 48 hours between time for thorough sanitization and cleaning.
Until further notice, each client and their families agree to this waiver and the below safety precautions when making an appointment for any type of photography services by K. Boyer Photography.

NOTICE & WAIVER

Client is hereby notified and agrees that:

1. While the State of Georgia has eased or eliminated various COVID-19 based restrictions on businesses, the conduct and performance of the services being provided by K. Boyer Photography Studio are subject to those rules in place at the time the photography services are to be performed.

2. Based upon the scope of the social distancing restrictions in place at the time of the photography services, certain aspects of the photographer/client interaction may be altered by necessity.

3. Client and all members of Client’s party agree to abide by the social distancing measures in force at the time of their session or event. Client and members of Client’s party explicitly agree and understand that failure to adhere to such social distancing measures places them at increased risk of COVID-19 exposure or transmission.

WAIVER

4. Client and members of Client’s party assume all risks associated with potential COVID-19 transmission or exposure in relation to the photography services being provided and accept sole responsibility for an illness, injury, damages, claims or expense arising therefrom regardless of the identity of the person alleged to be at fault for such transmission or exposure.

5. As consideration for this waiver, Studio agrees to waive any liability or claim against Client or members of Client’s party for COVID-19 transmission or exposure.

6. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Waivers contained in Sections 4 and 5 of this Notice and Waiver shall not be interpreted to prohibit actions or claims against persons who knowingly participate in the photography services while exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms or who knowingly participate while having an active COVID-19 infection.

He was so happy and has such a sweet disposition... smiles and grins all day long!! his little pizza theme was as cute as can be too.I have had a chance to photograph this little guy since he was born and we did his newborn photos and this is his first birthday shoot. The BEST part is that this little love came back from Nashville to see me for his photos. They moved a few months before he turned one and he came back!! Such an honor.

When I work with family's that have older siblings, I love to include them in some non-traditional photos... letting them play with their little brother or sister and not so staged and posed because everyday life is not staged and posed and perfect. Oftentimes it is silly, messy, crazy chaos and showing the fun and joy in that brings me great pleasure!

I have photographed this family since I did their firstborn son's newborn photos and now I get to meet baby sister and capture these beautiful precious moments too!!! You can tell from this photo that big brother is so happy and loves his brand new baby sister so much. He is precious and I loved my time with this family. These studio sessions are my posed family studio portraits and we try to get a wide variety of poses including family, siblings and all combinations we can think of. These are poses using wraps and sleepy. maybe even naked baby poses and they take about 2 - 4 hours, depending upon a wide variety of factors. If there is a sibling, then we typically al ot 3 -4 hours. If this is the first child then this style session is about 2 to 2.5 hours. It takes awhile to get your baby comfortably asleep and ready to be photographed. The joy of these session sis that we take our time and enjoy baby snuggles!!

World, meet sweet baby Ava. All newborn sessions are simply magical and this one was no exception. This beautiful young family lives in a gorgeous downtown Atlanta loft and I ventured down there for Ava's newborn photos. Their space (I wish I would have photographed their entire, beautifully decorated gorgeous apartment too!) was stunning and amazing in it's efficient use of space, bright natural light and amazing decorating. Perfect to bring home a little baby girl. Mom is a teacher and I met her at The Howard School while I was taking school portraits. She is amazing, sweet and totally in love with her precious baby girl which is not surprising because Ava might be as good a little baby as they come. She was calm, sweet and a total little love. Dad was pretty great too! I hope you enjoy these photos and this lovely family.

The Goat Farm was an especially great location for this musical, artistic young man's senior high school graduation photos. I love meeting these teenagers and helping identify the perfect location that suits their personality ... This young man is a St. Pius X High School Senior in Atlanta and he is spending his senior year taking college classes at Georgia State University so get a jump start on college credits as a freshman. He has a huge interest in music production and wants to find a college that will allow him to study business in the music industry. My daughter (same age!) also has similar musical interests so it was especially fun to chat about colleges, majors, careers and more in relation to the music industry.

A senior portrait session can take many forms but they all include a variety of shots with as many backgrounds as possible. We have senior mini sessions (30 minutes) as well regular senior sessions (up to an hour and a half to two hours). We can chose a variety of locations or stick to one place!! A Beautiful Georgia Tech Graduating Senior

This young woman is an example of our future: Brilliant, strong, kind, fun, happy, beautiful...so many adjectives to describe this young lady. I had a blast meeting her and her mom downtown at Georgia Tech campus to take some photos. We did cap and gown portraits on the iconic Georgia Tech Steam Engine. We wandered over to the Georgia Tech Bell Tower and up to the Georgia Tech Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons (CULC) building and all across campus. We popped a bottle of champagne up on the CULU building and it was fantastic! I adore meeting our future leaders. What a pleasure this photo shoot was.

I Love these sessions! So fun, relaxed and a in a really beautiful and magical setting to get everyone in the Christmas spirit!! Maybe it is the anticipation of the upcoming holiday, the dreams of sugarplums, the joy for moms in getting their Christmas card photos out of the way :)... So many reasons that everyone was happy and having a great time. Here are a few of my favorites... I hope you love them too! We hosted these in early November at a farm just north of Atlanta. it is about a 25 minute drive from the 285/85 interchange so it takes a little bit of planning but the couple that own Thompsons Tree Farm might be one of the nicest, friendliest couples I've ever met.

Santa is coming to Brookhaven for the 7th year in a row!!! WOW... We love our amazing Santa... He is THE real deal.

Santa will be visiting us early this year because the time between Christmas and New Years this year is SHORT!!! (just over 3 weeks!!!) This does not leave much time to get edited Santa photos back and Christmas cards done because there is one week LESS between Thanksgiving and Christmas. So, in order to get your photos and cards done in a timely fashion, we are inviting Santa to celebrate the holiday season with us on November 2nd at my home studio in Brookhaven! We are moving it back to the studio in Brookhaven because families overwhelmingly liked the homey feel of our Brookhaven home studio and the central location was a big factor too. So, we are excited to open it up to Santa again this Winter!!

Meet K. Boyer Photography's Studio Managers!

These last several years have seen tremendous growth in my small little start up photography business (official since 2007). We are now serving more people, photographing more families and we will be creating school portraits for over 4000 kids at 14 public and private schools in the Atlanta area!!! WOW WOW WOW! We have a record number of family sessions, newborns and mini sessions in the books already this year and we are just coming up on the crazy fall season.

So I am excited to introduce you to my crazy awesome friends and the amazing ladies I work with. I can not tell you how great it is to have Ari and Marian by my side on this journey. We work together as a great team and you will undoubtedly hear and meet both of them moving forward. They both joined my team last year (I am very late in writing this blog post!) and we survived the FALL and they did not run away screaming! :) I am pleased to introduce both these friends and colleagues.

Ari Hudnall is funny, hardworking, a mother of two beautiful elementary age children and wife to Jack. She has a passion for photography, a zest for life and an amazing ability to know what I need before I do! She keeps me on track, is crazy smart, provides valuable feedback and suggestions and I adore her and I feel confident you will too.

Marian Sheffield is an accounting guru, brilliant with a spreadsheet, mother to two COLLEGE age son's and married to Don. She is a numbers whiz but is also crazy creative and has a passion for family & scrapbooking so she is a great asset to our team. She has whipped the business end of K. Boyer Photography into shape and we are SO lucky to have her join us!

It's Fall!! Time for Back to School!

It is the start of a new school year! So much excitement... back to school shopping, new clothes, new shoes, pens, pencils and trapper keepers, meet the teachers and registration, back to schedules and sports, busy mornings and packing lunches. ... so many things to think about and coordinate. We can't forget that as moms, we should also pat ourselves on the back for actually MAKING it through the SUMMER!!!

My mother STILL has our school photos up in the kitchen by the telephone (Yes, it is still a landline!). It is truly a rite of passage.

School Pricing Myths:

Before we dive into costs of school photos, we would like to crush two common misconceptions about school portraits:

1) We do not get paid by the schools. We only make money when photos are purchased by families.

2) At K. Boyer Photography, every school receives a portion of net sales as a fundraiser. So a portion of whatever you spend, actually goes BACK to your child's school.

Why are school photos so expensive?

As a school photographer, I am frequently asked "Why are school photos so expensive?"

First and foremost, try to make each individual child in a school of 800 + kids (ages 2's to 13) share a genuine SMILE that lights up their eyes... Yup. That is what we do every single day at every single school. It is hard, but worth every single image. I always say that if my team and I were on candid camera, we would go viral in our attempts to make children smile!!

And... the Simple Answer...

Well, a simple answer is that the sheer amount of work and manpower involved to successfully shoot, cull, color correct, edit and upload the amazing volume of photos is extraordinary! Each school can involve anywhere from 250 - 1000 students and when you also throw in regular pesky business expenses like insurance, websites, camera and lighting gear, a $8 photo does not seem very expensive anymore!! Just in case you are interested and want to know a little bit more about the breakdown, keep reading!!

Our Fixed and Variable Costs.

My typical fixed costs include big expenses such as

taxes-- Uncle Sam has to have his cut. UGH
staff salary & labor. (read about my awesome KBP Crew!)
insurance -- boring but very necessary to protect all of us!
professional fees -- for example, I am a member of Professional Photographers of America and other organizations
continuing education & training (yearly conferences),
camera gear, (Adorama and B&H get an awful lot of money!)
lighting gear,
backdrops and props (Yes, I bring real plants and flowers to ALL my school portraits),
office equipment, website maintenance, (Zenfolio!) and computer support, (thank you Onyx Consulting!)
school ordering software (Thank you GOT PHOTO!)
studio rent & expenses,
accounting, (Thank you Andy Grant at Carr Riggs & Ingram)
WOW... that is A LOT!

In addition, there are also variable expenses to include and consider depending upon the shoot. For example,

shoot preparation and site location - all this doesn't just happen! Scouting locations takes lots of time and just gathering all the gear for a photo shoot of 250-800 people is lots of work
actual time spent shooting
endless hours of post production,
culling, uploading, data storage and management.

But WAIT... we still aren't done with COSTS!

And... we can't forget the Cost of Good Sold

These costs include the actual photographs, shipping, lab fees, printing fees and all the fundraising donations back to the school.

TOTAL EXPENSES - 92% of the cost of an image pays for all the various expenses listed above.

That is 92% TOTAL Expenses. The remaining 8% goes to my family as my salary and my retirement. So, if you purchase a $8 image, my net is .64 cents. Yup. That pays me for the endless hours of time, energy, travel, stress, worry and so much more to make sure I am capturing your loved ones in the here and now.

Affordable & A La Carte.... WHAAT????

With all of that said, I am a HUGE believer in keeping my pricing very reasonable and affordable for EVERYONE and you can buy a la carte with free shipping* if you want! WHHHHAAAT?? A 4x6 is $8 so I make .64c on your order. YUP. No need to purchase a huge package if all you want is one print or one digital image. My pricing and my business model allows for that flexibility. I believe 100% that every single family should be able to purchase a photo of their child so I price my images that way. It is that simple.

Spring Wildflower Mini Sessions

I love creating different types of photos in different locations and Prospect Farms in Lawrenceville was a brand new location for me and great fun. We rented a 1950's style ford truck for some variety in addition to the wildflowers. It created a little diversity and I loved it. Actually, the photos with the blue truck were some of my favorites!! It was a particularly hot spring day (in the 90's!!) and we were dying so the shade of the trees was a welcome relief.

I hope you enjoy some of these photos of these fun families. We had a ball and I look forward to our upcoming sunflower session at this same location. There are some great farms in the area that cater to photographers doing these sorts of themed events and I am looking forward to discovering some new and fun places to do these to continue to add variety to your session choices! :)

Senior Portraits at the Historic Goat Farm in Atlanta GA!

Wow! Just WOW! These sessions in Atlanta Ga for Senior Portraits are Amazing! The Goat Farm is an iconic location in Atlanta and while you might think there are goats there, there are not!! The goat farm is a complex of 19th century industrial buildings and is now a visual and preforming arts center with over 300 artists studio's.

The Goat farms history is as interesting as the space itself. Tucked away in West Midtown, this 10 acre historic property boasts an artist community, theatrical performance locations, a fantastic coffee house and loads and loads of beautiful venue's for photography! (Permit required as it is only open to members / artists). While there are no longer goats at this location, you can still see chickens, roosters and even some baby chick's! It was built during the 1880s, opened in 1889, and expanded in various phases through the early 1930s. By 1898, the site specialized in cotton-related machinery. During World War II, the complex produced ammunition and mortars. Since it's inception, the goat farm has housed many different groups, artists and even an antique mall! In 2010, it was used for filming in the episode "Vatos" of The Walking Dead. In 2012, it was use d for The Hunger
Games: Catching Fire filming.

I had the privilege of shooting all four of these girls at the Goat Farm this summer. We had a blast and discovered this great venue together. If you are ready for senior portraits at an iconic location, this is it. In October, they are going to be shutting the Goat Farm down and redeveloping it. It breaks my heart and while I can understand the need for expensive real estate to be developed and utilized, we are losing an iconic piece of Atlanta's history and creative bedrock to industrialism and commercialism. My goal before it gets torn down is to utilize it as much as I can and create amazing photos of amazing seniors in this location. So, if you are interested, let me know asap so we can work together and create your own magic in a place that will no longer exist after October 2019.

Want to read more about the Goat Farm and the new development that will be in this location? It sounds amazing and exciting in addition to being sad in a way. I am not sure how you capture the essence of the Goat Farm and transform it to a new and "updated" facility. I am crossing my fingers and I will be watching and will continue to rent space at the Goat Farm when everything is complete. In the meantime, let's watch the development ad capture the magic while we still have it.

I have called Dunwoody home since high school and my family and I have lived in Brookhaven for the last 24 years! I want to capture joy in its natural form and hosting our family sessions and mini sessions in special and unique outdoor locations allows us to add an element of playfulness and joy to our sessions that we can rarely get in a studio session. I want to capture children being children, joy and fun in toddlers, teenagers and even grandparents.

In addition to on location photography around the Atlanta area, I will also come to your home to create very special and uniquely your own lifestyle portrait images. Some of my favorite photos are the newborn lifestyle portraits in your own home. When I visit you in your home I will look for natural light and create timeless classic portraits of your family enjoying your garden, front porch or relaxing and playing inside. These sessions are limited to Midtown, Atlanta, Buckhead, Chamblee, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Roswell and Alpharetta. For special occasions, I can travel outside of these locations with some advance notice.
